TASKFORCE FOR THE HOMELESS - OVERNIGHTS OF HOSPITALITY The dates for First Parish Overnights are for the weeks of Nov. 30, Jan. 11, March 8, March 22
It's Time For A Change! Attention All Groups, Committees, Families
The Social Action Committee helps and supports the efforts of First Parish's Coordinator, Valerie Peck, of the Overnights of Hospitality, the Taskforce for the Homeless Shelter Program. We have been a strong congregation in supporting the homeless shelter and our efforts have been appreciated and supported. Now it is time for us to reevaluate our procedures.
Here's the problem. Each time we host the homeless shelter, it takes hours of calling to enlist people to help with the meals, to be chaperones, and to open the shelter each night. If we are going to sustain this effort for the long haul, we need to do something differently.
We are asking those who are able to commit now to support the program for this year's duration. Pick a night and commit to meals or chaperoning for each week we are hosting. That only equals 4 times for the year. Can't do that? Then pick something less, but commit and let us know now what you can do.
We are not asking you to cook meals all be yourself. Join with others to share the expense and the burden. Commit with a friend to chaperone. Can't do that? Then look on the Social Action Committee bulletin board for daily needed supplies and bring those to the SAC table and mark the supplies Homeless Shelter!
The Taskforce would also like the churches to provide sheets and pillowcases this year, and at the end of the week they need to be washed ready for use again. Does anyone have extra sheets and pillowcases they can donate to the Taskforce, and are there people who are willing to do a load of laundry as their way of helping out? Please let me know of any questions or issues you want to talk about concerning this.
Thank you all so much for your support
Valerie Peck Plymouth Taskforce for the Homeless: Gift Card Fundraiser This is a great way that you can support the Taskforce and do your shopping or dining at the same time. First, check out the list of merchants at www.glscrip.com. Select the merchants where you regularly shop. Decide what price gift cards you wish to order. Then, email Rich Pecorella at

with your list. Send him a check made out to the Plymouth Taskforce for the Homeless at 18 Lombard Street, Plymouth, MA 02360. The Taskforce will receive a percentage on the amount of the gift cards you order. The percentage varies with each merchant and is listed at the scrip’s website. The charge for postage is $7.50 per order, regardless of the size, so the more of us ordering gift cards, the smaller our individual postage cost will be. I order Shaw’s, Stop and Shop, CVS, Panera, Dunkin Donuts, and a few others. If you know you are going to shop at a store or dine at a restaurant on a regular basis, order gift cards and support the homeless at the same time. We anticipate this will be a difficult year for those less fortunate than we. Already homeless shelters are seeing a 25% increase in the numbers seeking a place to sleep. The Taskforce appreciates the willingness of First Parish and other congregations to provide a place for homeless men during the winter months. Recently, the Taskforce made a donation of $200 to First Parish to help with extra heating costs for the weeks we provide shelter. In addition to the winter shelters, the Taskforce also rents a half of a duplex in North Plymouth where five sober men live. Each contributes towards the rent, but what they pay doesn’t cover all the costs. The Taskforce receives some state funding and then pays the rest out of funds we raise. We also have a house acquisition fund so we won’t have to keep paying rent. It is, indeed, an” Interdependent Web” of existence that we all rely on to live on this planet. Some rely more, some less. Our positions can vary with our luck or lack of it. I hope you will all find it in your hearts to help those less fortunate by supporting the Taskforce. Thank you. Jan Palmer-Tarbox | Winter Spiral looking for donations and helpers | First Parish will once again sponsor the Winter Spiral in Kendall Hall as part to the Town Tree Lighting on Friday, December 5th. We will need lots of greenery to create this magical spiral and we were wondering if any of you had lots of extra greenery in your yards or woods that you could contribute to this activity. We will also need people to help set up our spiral, core apples, and be around during the spiral to help let people in and keep an eye on candles for us. We are accepting monetary donations to purchase the candles and apples used for the Spiral. Please let Kym Johnson know if you can help with any of this.
| | For those of you who have not yet experienced this magical night...when you enter into the spiral, you are invited to take a silent walk to the center of the evergreen spiral, light a candle and place your candle somewhere in the spiral as you journey out again. The room will be transformed with candlelight and music. This is a time for over-excited children to find the still, silent place of wonder deep within, and for adults to rediscover their own childlike hopes and dreams. |

Did You Know... That First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Plymouth was the church of the Pilgrims, but the Pilgrims were not UUs? Unitarianism did not make its way to America until the late 1700's. Many important thinkers of the time held Unitarian ideas, but there were no official Unitarian churches! It wasn't until Joseph Priestly, a dissenting minister from England persecuted for his beliefs, fled for his life and settled in Pennsylvania. There he helped establish the first official Unitarian church. Even so, in 1620 the Pilgrims did set sail for the New World seeking freedom to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience. And that is definitely an important Unitarian Universalist principle Alliance News October 13, 2008 The first meeting of the Alliance for 2008-2009 was held October 13th in Kendall Hall at 1:30pm. A short business meeting was conducted before the afternoon program. Susan O’neal of the Mayflower RSVP gave a presentation about the organizations Retired and Senior Volunteer program, the food Resource program, helping and caring for the Homeless, and the Partnership for Reading program, plus other services offered. Following the program, tea and pumpkin pie was served by our hostesses Bunny Dana and Dianne Brosnan. Alliance is held every 2nd Monday of the month in Kendall Hall at 1:30pm unless otherwise stated. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. | | Our November meeting will be November 12th at 12:00 noon. Please note change of time! We will have a welcome Luncheon for our Interim Minister and his wife. Everyone is welcome. Non-members will pay $10.00. Please RSVP to Ruth Nerboso at (508)866-2408, if you are planning to attend. | Please bring non-perishable foods for the Food Pantry. Hope to see everyone on November 12th. Shirley Forsman, President. |
Important update from the RE Ministry Team At the September congregational meeting, the congregation voted given our present financial situation, all committees and programs are not able to be funded this year. The RE Ministry Team will do its best to keep costs at a minimum this year while continuing to provide quality education to our youngest members.
The operating budget for the Religious Education program went from $2,500 for the year 2007-2008 to zero funding for this year. Because of this fact, we may have to charge for activities that we have not charged for in the past.
The RE Ministry Team would love to hear what you would like us to focus on and how to spend any money we may receive this year.
On this same note... for the past month, we have had no children in the nursery on Sunday mornings, so at this time we will not have childcare in the Parish House. You are always welcome to bring your child into Kendall Hall during the service if you wish. If there seems to be more of a need as the year goes on for childcare, please let me or a member of the RE Ministry Team know and we will see what we can do for you. Thank you. Kym Johnson
Denominational Affairs This is a big year! It’s election year, not just for President of the US, but also for President of the UU’s! President William Sinkford has served two terms, and will step down following General Assembly in June when a new President will be elected. And, we have an opportunity to vote for that person even if we don’t send any delegates to General Assembly, which is in Salt Lake City this year. There are two candidates, and you owe it to yourselves to learn about both of them and their proposed plans for the UUA. Rev. Peter Morales is Senior Minister at Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colorado, which is one of the UUA’s largest and fastest growing congregations. He has a Masters of Divinity degree from Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, CA. Website: www.moralesforuuapresident.org. Rev. Dr. Laurel Hallman is Senior Minister at First Unitarian Church of Dallas TX, which grew from 550 to 1100 adult members and from 187 to 346 RE enrollments. She has a Doctor of Divinity degree from Meadville-Lombard Theological School in Chicago, IL. Website: www.LaurelHallman.com. During the next couple of months, Rev. Dave and the Denominational Affairs Committee will be scheduling some information sessions about the two candidates, which will be announced in the Order of Service. We hope you will join us. |
